Can God Lie?

How confident are you that God can only tell the truth?  Many Christians do not treat God as an honest being.  They hear the statements He made in the Bible, but then turn around and say things like, “You never know what God’s gonna do.” Really?  God’s Word is full of if-then statements.  If you will do A, God will do B.  So if you do A, you should be CERTAIN that God will do B. Otherwise you’re treating Him as a liar.

“God is not a man that He should lie” – Numbers 23:19

“it was impossible for God to lie” – Hebrews 6:18

“in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began” – Titus 1:2

God cannot lie!  What He said, He backs. He watches over His Word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). When God says, “I am the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26) and that He “heals all your diseases” (Psalm 103:3), we have no proper choice but to believe His statements.

It’s important to know that while God’s love is conditional, some of His promises have conditions. If you will do A, He will do B.  If you tithe, He will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so big you can’t contain it.  The problem comes when you expect God to do B when you aren’t doing A.  For another example, God said that if you dwell in His secret place, He will keep you safe from sickness, accidents, terror, etc.. (see Psalm 91). But if you don’t spend any time with God when you aren’t going to Him with some emergency to solve, you aren’t meeting the condition. God is not obligated to do the “then” part of any “if-then” promise if we don’t do the “if” part. For another example, God said that if His people who are called by His name would humble themselves, pray, seek His face and turn from their wicked ways, He would hear from heaven and heal our land.  If no one cares enough to do these things, He hasn’t promised to do anything to heal our land.

But when we do the IF part, God is ALWAYS faithful to do the THEN part, and we need to act like it!
