Giving of Thanks

“Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks” – Ephesians 5:4

The church world and most Christians have majored on the first part of this verse. Don’t use this word, don’t use that word, don’t joke about this and that.  And the Bible does warn us about worldly talking. Christians should not be known for telling raunchy jokes.

But God, as usual, doesn’t just tell you what NOT to do; He tells you what TO do with your mouth. To many people, their speech is fine because of what they DON’T say. But are we giving thanks, or just avoiding “bad” speech?  If our mouths are in line with the Bible, we will thank God frequently for our many blessings.  Let’s not just dwell on not saying bad things; let’s be as diligent to obey God and give Him thanks!

“Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” – Ephesians 5:20

“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name” – Hebrews 13:15

“Be thankful” – Colossians 3:15

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” – Philippians 4:6

“Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light” – Colossians 1:12

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise.  Be thankful to Him and bless His name.” – Psalm 100:4
