Now and then I see something in a mailing from some ministry that tells me to “sow a financial seed for my healing” or for whatever other miracle I need. This is often accompanied by a testimony of someone who gave a large “seed” into that ministry and then got a miracle. Is this scriptural? I am convinced it isn’t. Let me tell you why I feel that way.
My first problem with this practice is that they are asking you to pay for something that’s already free! Jesus has already provided everything you need. God has blessed you with every spiritual blessing. His precious promises have given you everything that pertains to life and godliness, including whatever healing or miracle you need. You do not need to plant a “seed” into someone else’s ministry to reap a “harvest” of healing – you are already legally healed by the stripes of Jesus.
My second comment would be that seed produces after its own kind. I have no problem with the idea that you can sow money and reap a harvest of money – I teach that. But I can’t see how you can plant a seed of money and reap a healing. To me, that is like planting corn and reaping soybeans.
My third comment would be that this can lead to wrong motives in giving. I exhort people that the main reason you should give is because you believe in what the ministry is doing and you want to support it so that people can be blessed. If your main purpose for giving is so that you can reap a miracle like some guy in a testimony, I think you’re missing it. While we’re on that topic, people ask if you can “give to get.” I would say, yes, you can give to get because seed produces a harvest and it will work – BUT giving to get is not the highest motivation for giving. It is better to give from a motivation of love for the people that ministry will touch. You’ll still reap your harvest, but I believe your heart in giving should be one of such love that you would give even if you never got a return because you want those people to be helped by that ministry. I am not saying that you should not believe for your return because you should! You should expect God to honor His promise and multiply the seed you sowed.
