Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?

Do you enjoy God?  Are you in love with Jesus? If so, there’s nothing not to like about the Holy Spirit! It was the Holy Spirit who worked through Jesus to perform all the miracles He did.  The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit always work together and agree on everything. Yet most Christians have no concept of the role the Holy Spirit wants to have in their lives.

In fact, some people seem to have this idea that the Holy Spirit is weird and offensive. No, He’s very normal!  Of course, what He does will offend some people because Jesus Himself is a “rock of offense” to some people. But the Holy Spirit always walks in love just as God the Father and Jesus do.  He doesn’t hurt people.

More and more churches today seem to be afraid that the Holy Spirit would ruin their nice, orderly, “seeker-sensitive” services, so they don’t allow prophecy, speaking in tongues, or other manifestations of the Holy Spirit on Sunday morning.  Such services SHOULD be ruined! Man thinks, “Hide the Holy Spirit so that we don’t scare anyone. Ensure that there will be no wild excesses by not allowing anything at all! Be like certain famous pastors who have built megachurches doing this.” But the Bible says just the opposite:

“Do not quench the Spirit.”  -- 1 Thessalonians 5:19
“Do not despise prophesies.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:20
“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” – 1 Corinthians 14:1
“Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.” – Acts 2:18
“Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.” -- 1 Corinthians 14:39

So any pastor who forbids speaking in tongues is disobeying the Bible! He is responsible for seeing that things are done decently and in order, but He should NOT be responsible for quenching the Spirit!  It is not the pastor’s job to protect his flock from the Holy Spirit. Instead, he should introduce his people to Him!
